SPK Montessori-inspired Curriculum

Practical Life

Let’s think of all the simple, routine tasks which we perform each day. For example, getting dressed and washed, preparing food, setting and cleaning a table, washing up, and generally cleaning and tidying the house. These are all activities of everyday living, which a child watches every day and sometimes attempts to imitate. So practical life activities provide opportunities for children to learn essential life skills and help them physically, emotionally, and cognitively. These activities also promote concentration, self-discipline, and a sense of order which is indirect preparation for further reading and writing activities.

Sensorial materials play a crucial role in the development of the whole child. Children learn to perceive, interact, and experience the world around them and get prepared for success in higher education, life, and well-being. These materials are carefully crafted to focus on the five senses in order to introduce and grow everything that is perceived. They also help prepare children’s mathematical minds and encourage early language skills.

Sensorial
Literacy

Language materials and related activities in Montessori are intended to provide children with a sensory understanding of how language works. The materials and activities range from the concrete to the abstract and build on skills that a child has already developed through Sensorial and Practical Life.

The Montessori mathematics materials are designed to allow the child to develop mathematical awareness through the use of specially designed equipment thus allowing the child to grasp concrete ideas leading to more abstract mathematical concepts such as addition and subtraction. Through the use of the materials, the children acquire a love of numbers and have within them a desire to explore numbers and their equivalent in their environment.

Numeracy
Cultures

The Montessori cultural area allows children the freedom to explore the world they live in through a variety of activities in history, geography, biology, and science. Children have access to continents puzzles, science experiments, animals from different part of the world and their habitats, and activities that allow exploration of the natural world. Cultures from different parts of the world are also explored and celebrated.

Creative activities are fundamental to successful learning. This enables children to make connections between all curriculum areas and as a result, extend their learning and enhance their imagination. We promote this through music, movement, art, dance, role-play, yoga, imagination, play with sand and water, story, and poetry.
